Internships at Broadturn Farm
Learning how a small diversified farm operates is an on-going experience for everyone at the farm. The physical work is hard and sometimes repetitive, but is balanced with mental challenges which demand creativity. Delicious food, beautiful scenery, an appreciative community, and deeply satisfying work make the effort worth its while. Learning happens mostly through hands-on work, but is supplemented by structured weekly workshops, farm visits, plenty of literature, and individual guided study.
The internship program at Broadturn Farm incorporates all elements of farm work, including planning, research, seeding, bed preparation, planting, cultivating, mulching, pest management, harvesting, and vegetable storage. Interns (a.k.a. apprentices) also work with the community in teaching systems and skills, sales, outreach, and event facilitation. Being part of the farm crew involves group effort in meal preparation, flexibility, cooperation, and healthy communication skills. Enthusiasm, creativity, and full engagement are necessary.
