CSA Community Supported Agriculture

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and is a marketing approach which allows a farm and a community to develop relationships. Also known as a farm co-op, CSA is a national movement that is connecting people with fresh, seasonal, often organic produce at a reduced cost. It is much more, however, than being just about vegetables. At Broadturn Farm we want to involve the community in the process of raising food. Our methods are certified organic, but we rely more on the face-to-face relationships with our CSA members to ensure transparency. We strive to involve the community in such a way that consumers become co-producers. After all, our common goals are broad: healthy, sustainable and humanely raised food; a strong local economy; and a supportive community. For more information about the many incarnations of CSA programs nationwide, see http://www.sare.org/csa/. Also, Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeneres Association (or MOFGA) maintains a database of CSA farms in Maine: click here.

Vegetable CSA program

In the 2010 season we will have 125 members in our vegetable CSA program. The cost is $525 if paid in 3 installments, or $500 if paid in full. The first harvest should be mid to late June with greens, and perennial herbs. Every week from spring until fall, we harvest what the season provides: Spring arrives with lettuce, Asian greens, spring onions, radishes, peas and carrots. Mid summer brings us tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, corn, and melon. Fall comes on with squashes, beets, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, and potatoes. We plant for diversity, and everyone learns something about some of the less popular vegetables like turnips, brussel sprouts, or patty pan squash. Usually the freshness factor wins over those who try “new” things out, but we do our best anyway to pile on the favorites: carrots, strawberries, lettuce, cukes, peas, and those little orange cherry tomatoes- Sungolds!

You may choose to pay all at once (for a discount) or over three installments, March 1st, May 1st, June 1st. Although we love to see everyone out at the farm as often as possible, we can help to coordinate a pickup group for your neighborhood. You pick up your weekly harvest on either Tuesday or Friday, between 1:00PM and 6:00PM. Items are set out in the Long Barn, and a chalkboard indicates how much of any item you are allowed to take. There is an “extras” table where you can leave something behind, or take whatever is surplus. This is not like shopping at the grocery store! This is second only to having your own backyard garden.

Thanks for your interest. We have reached our capacity for both the Vegetable and Flower CSA programs for the season and are no longer offering shares. To sign up for the Vegetable or Flower CSA wait list for 2011 please click here for our online form.

Besides the other options on this page, don't forget MOFGA's CSA Directory for a list of other CSA in the area..

There is NO LONGER an 8 hour per season work requirement for the CSA. That being said, we have work parties on occasion. On the Tuesday morning and Friday morning harvests, we always look forward to extra hands. You don't need to call ahead to join us for a harvest. Just show up and we'll set you to working with one of us on a part of the morning's work.

Flowers

Broadturn Farm grows a wide variety of certified organic cut flowers in our garden and we offer our flowers and design services. You don't have to be getting married here at the farm to have our flowers grace the tables at your event or in your home or office. We only design with our farm raised products and wild greens harvested from our land. This dictates the availability of products and services. Our season runs from late June until the frost, usually mid to late September.

Local, farm raised flowers offer an alternative to imported flowers. The benefits for you include a cost savings over imported flowers, as well as a sense of comfort knowing you are supporting local agriculture and organic farming. The vase life is longer, the blooms are fresher and the carbon footprint is smaller. We can not always guarantee a specific flower will be blooming at the right time, but we can work with you to select colors and styles that reflect your preferences.

Flower CSA Program

For 10 weeks, and $100, you will receive large bouquet of seasonal, organic cut flowers from the flower garden. Cuts will start in late June to early July and continue into September. You can expect to find zinnia, snapdragons, celosias, batchelor's buttons, sunflowers, dahlias, delphinium, digitalis, rudebeckia, salvia, yarrow, amaranth, ammi, gomphrena, strawflower and other assorted blooms in your bouquets throughout the season. Bring a little of the glorious color of the farm home with you everyweek.
